Rolls-Royce Limited was a manufacturer of automobiles and, later, aircraft and diesel engines.
It was founded on March 15, 1906, by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, following a partnership formed in 1904, and soon became the principal supplier to the British Royal Family.
In 1931, the company acquired its automotive rival Bentley, whose finances were in dire straits during the Great Depression. From then until the end of 2002, when the Rolls-Royce brand became the property of the BMW Group and the Bentley brand became part of the Volkswagen Group, Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars were often identical apart from the radiator grille and minor details.
