Fiat 124 Spider “America”
The “124 Sport Spider” was built on the shortened chassis of the sedan and was equipped with a 1438 cc, four-cylinder, twin-cam engine fed by a twin-barrel carburetor with a timing belt drive – a cutting-edge solution for the time – that delivered 90 hp at 6,500 rpm and gave the car a claimed top speed of 170 km/h. It had a rigid rear axle with modified mounting points (two pairs of longitudinal struts, replacing the previous “cross” design, to improve steering precision) and a power brake system as standard. A new five-speed gearbox was also made available as standard.
The spider was designed and also produced by Pininfarina. The coupé and spider were first sold in the United States in 1968.
The second series (identifiable by the hood bumps) was introduced in 1969, while the third series came onto the market in 1972.
