The 1956 Suez Crisis had caused a gasoline shortage in Europe and a corresponding increase in prices. The chairman of the British Motor Corporation, George Harriman, commissioned the design of a four-seater minicar, equipped with a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine.
The car went on sale on August 26, 1959, under the Austin and Morris brands.
In 1990, the Rover Group overhauled the Mini, primarily for safety and pollution reasons. The body was strengthened, while the engine, now 1275 cc, adopted single-point electronic fuel injection and a catalytic converter. Power was 50 hp. The only version available on the Italian market was the Mayfair (with a closed body or with an Open Classic canvas sunroof). The grille was once again chrome.
The Mini Cabriolet also arrived in 1993, with a Cooper engine, upgraded trim (the dashboard was made of wood), and prominent aerodynamic features.
The classic Mini went out of production on October 4, 2000, ushered in by the Final Edition special edition that included four models: the Seven, the Cooper, the Cooper Sport, and the Knightsbridge.
