The Porsche 356 is a sports car, both coupé and convertible, produced by Porsche continuously from 1948 to 1966. It can be considered the first “production” model produced by the Stuttgart-based manufacturer.
In just under two decades, several versions followed, with different engines ranging from 1.1 to 2.0 liters.
The 356 is a car that made history, boasting exceptional levels of handling, lightness, reliability, and road holding, paving the way for the future Porsche 911.
Max Hoffmann requested a sportier and more affordable open-top version of the 356 America Roadster for 1954, made of lightweight aluminum but too expensive, to be marketed in the sunny markets of Florida and California. Thus, in September, one of the most famous cars in history was born: the Porsche 356 Speedster. The open body with a lowered windshield, sport seats, removable side windows, lightweight soft top, and overall simplified equipment ensured its success until 1958.
It also had a successful film career after James Dean (who drove a white 1500S as much as possible), like other young Californians, fell madly in love with it. It appeared in numerous successful films and TV series, such as Detective’s Story (1966) with Paul Newman; very often, it was reruns that “starred,” as in Top Gun (1986) alongside Kelly McGillis.
